Time Magic and Cosmic Cycles

Understanding the mystical relationship between time, consciousness, and cosmic cycles in astrological practice.

What is Time Magic?

The ancient seers of India called this the study of Muhurta.

The mystery of the present is revealed through the quality of time. The future as an ongoing uncertainty urges us to demarcate moments, order them, then compare and contrast in an attempt to gain security. Even though uncertainty is fundamental, our experience occurs in the midst of cyclic factors that give an approximation to how similar events will be seen and felt.

The Sun in the bright sky and the Moon shining at night largely dominate our life cycles and determine the nature of our activity. The rest of the planets and the stars also influence the quality of the time and along with the nakshatras either assist in giving birth to growing events in our lives and in the world or work to dissolve, remove and destroy what has been created.

The Dual Nature of Time

The Surya Siddhanta says, "Kala (Time) is the destroyer of the worlds. Another Kala has for its nature to bring what is to pass." - Surya Siddhanta 1.10

Apocalyptical Time

Governs how long universes, stars, galaxies, solar systems and the end point of large complex systems.

Muhurta Time

The creative aspect of time that we work with in the art of Muhurta - bringing what is to pass.

The Art of Perfect Timing

Muhurta is a moment and each moment we are in a continuously dynamic situation with ourselves and our world. When inner and outer worlds connect events will happen effortlessly. This bodes well when positive inner aspirations meet creative and supportive outer situations and yet also enables destructive inner forces meeting catastrophic outer circumstances.

One example is, if you have been wanting to start a business then when the timing is supportive for this we will have the opportunity to create it and correspondingly, when the time is against it, no matter how hard we struggle it will continuously fail. Also, anyone may nurse destructive thoughts, emotions and actions against someone or something but if that thing has more planetary energy to maintain its current state it will not be destroyed.

The art of Muhurta takes into account a great host of factors from planets and the position of the Sun and Moon along with the nakshatras, or "fixed stars" to arrive at an understanding of what the cosmos supports either bringing into the world or what it is taking out. With this knowledge we can find those moments, muhurtas, that will grant the greatest of ease and success in our endeavors and avoid the times were failure is most probable.

The Cosmic Flow of Creation and Destruction

The most commonly known Muhurtas are the new and full Moon along with the four seasons. Much folklore is devoted to these times and planetary designations; plant in spring, harvest in autumn, etc. Since the universe we experience is in a state of constant interchange of energy and dynamic fluidity we can measure the flow and flux by star and planetary positions. This allows for alignment of forces.

Since the balance of the universe must be maintained in order for its function to occur there is not only new creation but there is also passing away and destruction of what has come into appearance. We are very much aware of what we would like to have appear in our lives and yet the destruction of a disease is very welcome to those battling illness, the elimination of enemies and obstructions is vital to the advance of troops in battle.

Powerful Planetary Alignments

The universe is an aggregate of myriad forces and many of these must be taken into account in order to gain a favorable muhurta but there are some alignments that are said to have enough power to overcome many negativities:

  • Jupiter, Venus or Mercury being powerful and in an angle (house 1,4,7,10) clears negative forces like a lion upon a herd of elephants
  • The lord of the navamsa lagna in an angle or in the 11th house removes all blemishes as fire burns cotton

The Wisdom of "When"

There is a stock market adage that says "Don't tell me what to buy, tell me when to buy." Muhurta is the "when". When we get the timing right, everything else takes care of itself.

Working with Time Magic

To harness the power of Muhurta in your life, consider these principles:

For Creation & Growth

  • • Align with waxing moon phases
  • • Choose benefic planetary hours
  • • Work with supportive nakshatras
  • • Honor seasonal transitions

For Release & Clearing

  • • Utilize waning moon energy
  • • Work with malefic planets constructively
  • • Choose dissolving nakshatras
  • • Honor endings and completions

The ancient science of Muhurta reminds us that we are not separate from the cosmic rhythms that surround us. By learning to read the subtle signatures of time itself, we can move in harmony with the greater intelligence that orchestrates all of existence. In this alignment, our efforts become effortless, our intentions find their perfect moment of manifestation, and we discover that time itself is our greatest ally in the dance of creation.
